After acting in some minor films, she landed the role that would prove to be a major breakthrough in her career. The role she was chosen for was Penny Lane in the comedy drama film Almost Famous. Though the film didn't do very well at the box office , it was well received by critics and helped make Kate a star in the American film industry.
